A short list of solid reads for consumers wishing to gain a deeper understanding of their market. These books have all come highly recommended from a variety of different sources. As they have kept cropping up in diferent articles that I have read I have decided to gather them all here together as a mini reading list!
- The Good Shopping Guide: Your Guide to Shopping with a Clear Conscience (Shopping Guide) – 700 consumer brands comparatively reviewed in detail by Friends of the Earth
- The Rough Guide to Ethical Shopping – examines the issues (eg ‘do boycotts work? Is buying local better? How fair is fair-trade? What about sweatshops, or organics?’) in a balanced way giving advantages and drawbacks.
- Shopped: The Shocking Power of British Supermarkets – a thought provoking behind the scenes look at the way supermarkets operate
- Do the Right Things! – a guide to starting out down the ethically responsable road
- Life Stripped Bare: My Year Trying To Live Ethically – similarly, an accessible guide from the Guardian columnist Leo Hickman
